Romanian player Dany Parlafes folded the second nuts on the river against Ognyan Dimov in the heads-up of EPT Deuville and many players have called it the best laydown of the year. Check out the hand and Rainer Vollmar’s (poker player and poker journalist) analysis of the hand below!
Bulgarian player Ognyan Dimov won EPT Deuville 2015 for €543,700, he managed to come from behind in the heads-up battle against Dany Parlafes, eventually sucking out with AJ against AK to win the title. During heads-up play, Parlafes made an amazing laydown, folding the second nuts after Dimov overbet the pot with the nuts.
Rainer Vollmar’s analysis:
Parlafes made an amazing fold that you don’t see every day. He limped on the button with Q-8 and Dimov checked with T-8, both of which are reasonable plays in this spot.
The flop was 7-9-2 with two spades and Dimov check/called a bet from Parlafes with his open-ended straight draw.
He hit the nuts with a 6 on the turn and checked once again, hoping that Parlafes continues betting.
Parlafes decided to take the free card and made an inferior straight when a 5 hit the river. He couldn’t be happy for long, as he was put in an extremely tough spot when Dimov made an overbet of 1.2 million into a pot of 680.000.
The betsize polarized Dimov’s range to the nuts or nothing. Dimov probably expected Parlafes to fold his weak hands to a smaller bet aswell, but would have a hard time folding a set or a straight.
Parlafes had pretty bad odds, getting 1,5-1 on his money and probably thought that Dimov might sometimes play a 9-high straight the same way, meaning he would only chop the pot and win the 340,000 he already invested.
Even with these reasons folding the second nuts there against an aggressive player like Dimov is a world class move and it’s possible that Parlafes caught some kind of live read on Dimov, considering that they have been playing heads-up for more than 130 hands before.
