Talented both in poker and in providing his opponents with a couple of lines less than welcome, Dwyte Pilgrim earned his first major event winning yesterday night at the WPT Borgata, the largest World Poker Tour event ever with a field of 1,042. Those regarding him a “minor league grinder” are thus finally proved wrong.

Dwyte Pilgrim wins his first WPT title

It was clear from the very beginning of the six-handed final table that they were “gonna shock the world” and it took 193 hands (about 7.5 hours) for Pilgrim to live up to his words. From level 34 (75,000/150,000/25,000) they climbed to level 41 (300,000/600,000/75,000) and play became increasingly heated as they progressed. The final table seating was as follows:

As they played down the heads-up, Pilgrim kept Mohajeri behind almost all along, and he was keen on reminding his opponent of it, too: “Watching the WPT final table. The crowd is increasingly getting on Kia’s side as Dwight continues to be rude and insult him,” Lee Childs tweeted from the venue. Hand #193 brought about the showdown of the two as Mohajeri went all-in on a board of K:h T:s 9:s 7:d which Pilgrim immediately called. Mohajeri held K:s 9:c but Pilgrim showed Q:h J:s and, the former missing his full house with the 5:d river, he won with his King-high straight. He sobbed with joy upon his greatest achievement so far – I’m pretty sure, however, that it wasn’t his last.

The winnings are seen below.
